Breast cancer commonly presents as a painless lump in the breast or underarm. Other signs include change in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, redness, discharge (especially blood-stained), or non-healing skin changes. Some patients experience localized pain or heaviness. Early stages may be asymptomatic, highlighting the importance of regular screening and prompt evaluation of any new breast changes.

High-risk individuals include women above 40 years, those with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, known genetic mutations (such as BRCA), early menarche or late menopause, nulliparity, obesity, and prolonged hormone replacement therapy. Lifestyle factors like alcohol consumption and sedentary habits also increase risk. Prior breast lesions or previous breast cancer further elevate the likelihood of recurrence.

Breast cancer is detected through a combination of clinical breast examination, imaging, and tissue diagnosis. Mammography is the primary screening tool, supported by ultrasound or MRI in selected cases. Any suspicious lesion is confirmed by biopsy. Early detection through regular screening significantly improves treatment outcomes and survival by identifying cancer before symptoms develop

No, a biopsy does not cause cancer to spread. Modern biopsy techniques are safe, precise, and widely used worldwide. They are essential for confirming diagnosis, cancer type, and receptor status, which guide treatment planning. Extensive scientific evidence shows no increased risk of tumor spread due to biopsy, and delaying biopsy can actually worsen outcomes by postponing definitive treatment.

Breast cancer surgery includes breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) and mastectomy, depending on tumor size, stage, and patient preference. Oncoplastic techniques combine cancer removal with cosmetic preservation. Sentinel lymph node biopsy or axillary dissection may be performed for staging. Reconstructive surgery can be done immediately or later, aiming for both cancer control and quality of life.

A: Dr. Kaur believes healing extends beyond removing the tumor. She provides compassionate counseling, realistic expectation-setting, aesthetic planning, and personalized aftercare. Her reconstructive techniques restore natural shape, while survivorship care addresses physical comfort, scars, mobility, and emotional well-being. Patients receive guidance on lifestyle, rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up, helping them regain confidence, identity, and control throughout and after cancer treatment.

No, not all breast cancers require mastectomy. Many women can safely undergo breast conservation surgery when detected early. Mastectomy is typically recommended for large tumors, multicentric disease, genetic mutations, or when personal preference leans toward complete removal. With oncoplastic advances, even some larger tumors can still be managed with breast preservation. Dr. Kaur tailors the recommendation based on clinical safety and patient comfort.

A chemoport is a small device placed under the skin to deliver chemotherapy safely and comfortably. It prevents repeated needle pricks and protects veins from irritation. Dr. Kaur inserts chemoports using minimally invasive techniques with quick recovery. Chemoports are recommended for women requiring long-term or frequent chemotherapy, ensuring smoother treatment sessions, fewer complications, and greater comfort throughout the cancer care journey.

Oncoplastic surgery does not reduce cancer detection accuracy. Imaging like mammograms, ultrasounds, and MRIs remain effective. Dr. Kaur ensures surgical planning supports easy future monitoring by maintaining proper tissue orientation and marker placement. Follow-up imaging protocols may be adjusted slightly but remain highly reliable. Her approach ensures both oncological safety and aesthetic preservation without compromising surveillance or early detection.

Recovery varies depending on the procedure. Most women resume light activities within one to two weeks and return to normal routines in four to six weeks. Flap-based surgeries may require slightly longer healing. Dr. Kaur provides individualized post-operative care, pain management, wound guidance, and physiotherapy support to ensure smooth recovery and optimal long-term outcomes. Regular follow-ups help monitor healing and maintain breast aesthetics.

Reconstruction options include implant-based reconstruction, autologous tissue flaps, LD mini flaps, and oncoplastic methods. Implants offer shorter surgery and recovery, while autologous flaps provide a natural look and feel using your own tissue. Dr. Kaur helps you choose based on body type, cancer stage, lifestyle, medical history, and personal goals. The goal is to restore natural shape, symmetry, and comfort after cancer treatment.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) identifies the first lymph nodes cancer may spread to. It helps determine staging and whether further treatment is needed while avoiding unnecessary removal of multiple lymph nodes. SLNB significantly reduces risks like lymphedema, pain, and mobility issues. Dr. Kaur performs SLNB using minimally invasive methods to ensure accuracy, faster recovery, and preservation of arm function.

Volume displacement techniques reshape the remaining breast tissue after tumor removal, ideal for moderate-sized breasts. Volume replacement techniques use tissue flaps like LICAP, MICAP, LTAP, STICAP, or LD mini flaps to restore lost volume, especially in smaller breasts or larger excisions. Dr. Kaur selects the approach that ensures the best combination of cancer control, natural appearance, and long-term results tailored to each woman’s anatomy.

You may be a candidate for BCS if the tumor is small to moderate in size relative to your breast, is localized, and can be safely removed with clear margins. Dr. Kaur evaluates tumor location, breast density, medical history, and your personal preferences before recommending BCS. With oncoplastic techniques, even larger tumors can sometimes be removed while preserving the breast’s shape and symmetry.

Oncoplastic breast surgery combines cancer removal with plastic surgical techniques to preserve breast shape, symmetry, and aesthetics. Unlike standard surgery where appearance may be secondary, oncoplasty focuses on both cure and cosmetic outcomes. It allows larger tumor removal while maintaining natural contour. Dr. Kaur customizes each procedure based on tumor location, breast size, and patient goals, ensuring safety without compromising appearance or confidence.
